Dinner and Devotional

A ward Relief Society extended invitations for its Christmas Dinner and Devotional to members of the Stake Relief Society Presidency.  I was honored and excited to attend.  When I arrived, I learned that we had reserved seats in a prime location to see the speakers and presentation.  The speakers were Liz Lemon Swindle and Susan Easton Black, two very renown and talented women in the Church.  They sat right next to me and I got to know a little more about them.

Susan Easton Black has taught Religion at BYU for 36 years and written over 120 books.  Liz Lemon Swindle is a talented artist who, among many things, was commissioned to go to Africa and create art portraying Jesus Christ with children in the area.  Sis. Black gave some lesser known insights into the political and cultural environment during the time of the Savior's birth.  Sis. Swindle showed video clips of actors/models used to depict various Biblical scenes directly followed by the resulting painting.  I had never experienced anything like it.  Some of the art included Peter and John running (likely toward the empty tomb), Jesus reaching for Peter as he sank into the water, the woman and her accusers waiting while Jesus wrote in the sand, Jesus holding children, and so many more.

Even more than from carols or bell choirs, I felt the Christmas Spirit throughout the evening.  What an incredible experience.

Thank you Cedar Hills 16th ward for a truly inspiring evening.

I have been a longtime fan on Liz Lemon Swindle! I have one of her portraits of Christ on my wall.
Susan Eaton Black is the Sister of Michael's Aunt! Sounds like a great night!
